State Oceanic Administration Says China's Coastal Waters Are Still Seriously Contaminated

On January 16, the State Oceanic Administration issued the 2007 China Marine Environment Quality Bulletin. The "Gazette" shows that the pollution situation in China's coastal waters remains severe, and the main pollutants in seawater are still inorganic nitrogen, active phosphates and petroleum.
The "Gazette" pointed out that the water quality of the nearshore coastal areas has improved slightly, but the pollution level is still serious; most of the offshore sea areas are clean sea areas; the water quality of the offshore sea areas has maintained a good state. At the end of the entire sea area, the area of clean water quality standards reached approximately 145,000 square kilometers, which is approximately 0.4 million square kilometers less than in 2006. Severely polluted sea areas are mainly distributed in Liaodong Bay, Bohai Bay, Huanghekou, Laizhou Bay, Yangtze River estuary, Hangzhou Bay, Pearl River estuary, and some large and medium-sized cities nearshore local waters. The main pollutants in seawater are still inorganic nitrogen, active phosphates and oils.
Of the 573 sea inlets and outlets monitored by the marine administrative authorities at various levels, about 87.6% of the sewage outlets exceeded the pollutants discharged, and the main pollutants (or indicators) exceeded the COD, phosphate, and suspensions. Substances and ammonia nitrogen. The results of the monitoring of pollutants from some of the sewage outlets in the sea showed that high levels of PAHs and highly toxic heavy metals were detected in the sewage, and the environmental quality of the adjacent sea areas was significantly affected.
