St. Charles 2nd Alarm 6/1/11

The St. Charles Fire Department tackled a second-alarm blaze on Wednesday at Salerno’s on the Fox, a popular restaurant located at 320 N. 2nd Street. You can read more about it in the Chicago Sun-Times article [here](insert link) or check out the Tribune's coverage [here](insert link). According to Fire Chief Patrick Mullen, no injuries were reported during the incident, which was initially called in at 5:24 p.m. Smoke was clearly visible billowing from the rear of the single-story eatery. "It seems like the fire originated near the gas meters," Mullen explained. "This was a serious situation, akin to dealing with a blowtorch." Firefighters from ten nearby departments worked tirelessly to douse the stubborn flames, which were fueled by a ruptured natural gas line. Their efforts were crucial in containing the damage before it spread further. John Tulipano arrived at the scene shortly after the alarm sounded and captured several images of the apparatus that responded to the emergency. His photos provide a detailed look at the resources deployed to manage the crisis. One of the first units on the scene was St. Charles Engine 103, positioned strategically down the street for easy access to a hydrant. This unit played a vital role in supporting the initial attack lines. Geneva, another department that lent assistance, brought both their Truck 206—a modern Pierce Snorkel vehicle—and Engine 208, a robust Pierce Enforcer. These units were stationed close by, ready to assist as needed. Elburn and Countryside Engine 302, a Spartan/Alexis top-mount model, was also present in staging. Its positioning allowed for quick deployment if necessary. Batavia contributed two pieces of equipment: Truck 1, a Pierce Dash tower ladder, and Engine 2, a 2009 Pierce Arrow XT. Although Truck 1 remained unused, its presence underscored the collaborative effort among neighboring departments. Additionally, the newly formed Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue Department dispatched Engine 1823, a vintage 1992 Spartan/Alexis 1,250-GPM engine previously based in North Park, Illinois. This unit added valuable capacity to the collective response. John’s gallery includes even more images showcasing the scale and coordination involved in extinguishing this challenging fire. His work highlights the dedication and teamwork displayed by firefighters from multiple jurisdictions working together to protect lives and property. It’s inspiring to see how communities come together in moments like these, ensuring safety and minimizing potential harm.
