This morning, Elmhurst firefighters were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer that had overturned on the northbound ramp of Route 83 heading toward the eastbound Ike. Upon arrival, they discovered the truck lying on its side, trapping the driver inside the cab. During the rollover, the trailer hit a utility pole, causing it to buckle in the center and spill some of its load of plastic pellets onto the roadway.
Elmhurst’s emergency response team mobilized quickly, sending out two medic units, a battalion chief, an engine crew, a tower ladder, and the specialized heavy rescue unit. The rescue operation proved challenging, taking over 45 minutes to safely extract the driver. Due to the severity of the situation, the incident commander called for medical evacuation via helicopter. Lifestar Chicago, formerly known as Loyola Lifestar, arrived shortly after the extrication was complete and airlifted the patient to the hospital.
I happened to be nearby and managed to capture several photos of the scene. One image shows the Lifestar helicopter landing on the northbound lanes of Route 83 just south of the Eisenhower Expressway to pick up the injured driver. Another shot highlights the impressive lineup of Elmhurst fire vehicles along the exit ramp, as firefighters worked tirelessly to free the trapped individual. A third photograph documents the moment when the rescued driver was transferred from an Elmhurst ambulance into the care of Lifestar personnel.
In another picture, you can see a steel cable from Elmhurst’s squad vehicle being used alongside rescue jacks to stabilize the truck while the operation unfolded. After the successful rescue, firefighters began packing up their equipment and clearing the scene, as captured in yet another image. Post-rescue, significant damage to the truck became evident, with the trailer split open, scattering debris into the surrounding grass, and the tractor needing to be partially cut apart to reach the driver.
An additional photo shows an engine company from Bensenville standing by to secure the landing zone as the helicopter prepared for takeoff, en route to the hospital. It was quite the scene, and it's clear the teamwork between the Elmhurst firefighters and Lifestar personnel made a real difference in this incident.
