In a recent training exercise held at Woodland Intermediate School in Gurnee, the local police and fire departments joined forces to simulate a mass casualty event. This drill, conducted on May 2nd, 2015, aimed to enhance emergency response times in critical situations by testing a novel strategy. Traditionally, police secure an area before calling in paramedics, which can delay medical assistance. In this training, officers swept through rooms without fully securing them, allowing paramedics to quickly assess and treat injuries. This method could significantly improve survival rates in hostage or active shooter scenarios.
Gurnee's law enforcement regularly practices such drills across various landmarks, including Six Flags and Gurnee Mills, ensuring familiarity with potential crisis zones. The U.S. Navy also took part, assuming roles within the scenario, while personnel from neighboring departments like Grayslake and Waukegan contributed. Teachers were actively engaged in the simulation, adding authenticity to the drill.
The exercise began with a routine call regarding a broken leg, escalating when gunshots were reported. From there, the scenario unfolded dynamically, depending on the responders' actions. William Meyer, administrative commander for Gurnee police, emphasized the importance of realism in these simulations. Moulage techniques were employed to create lifelike injuries, such as burns and fractures, simulating the aftermath of an explosion.
Interestingly, the exercise did not distinguish between students and potential threats, reflecting the unpredictability faced by police in real-life situations. Gurnee isn't the first to adopt this innovative approach; a similar drill took place in Bristol, Wisconsin, just a month prior. These efforts underscore the growing emphasis on collaborative emergency preparedness, ensuring communities are better equipped to handle crises swiftly and effectively.
