What is "high-end equipment manufacturing" is currently not clearly defined. However, in general, high-end equipment manufacturing should have several characteristics, such as high reliability, high strength, and high precision, and it is difficult for domestic production. CNOOC, coal chemical, electronic integrated circuits, nuclear power, wind power, and high-end machine tools will all become key industries for high-end equipment manufacturing breakthroughs.

The reason why high-end equipment manufacturing has become a strategic emerging industry is to replace imported materials and enable domestically advanced products to become the pillars of national economic development. Qu Xianming, former deputy director of the Institute of Machinery Science, believes that high-end equipment manufacturing is a strategic emerging industry characterized by advanced technology and basic maturity. There is already a considerable technical base and talent pool in China; there is a large market space for equipment manufacturing. The industry and the national economy can play a supporting role; the use of the national economy is more effective; at the initial stage of industrial growth, there is great potential for growth; and there is sufficient protection in the energy and resource supply system.

In accordance with the above description and characteristic requirements, relevant departments have put forward a number of high-end equipment manufacturing industries that need urgent development. For example, in the field of new energy power generation equipment, with the goal of high-efficiency, energy-saving, clean and environmentally friendly, and intelligent, we will actively develop new energy power generation equipment. In terms of smart grids and their equipment, we will strengthen the construction of UHV power transmission and distribution and smart grids, and focus on development. Analysts said that the “Decision of the State Council on Accelerating the Cultivation and Development of Strategic Emerging Industries” currently has only a framework content, and it needs functional departments to further refine it.

In this regard, Guoxin Securities researcher Chen Jian believes that one of the signs of “big change” is the rise and improvement of China’s aircraft manufacturing industry. Marine engineering is also an important part of high-end equipment manufacturing. Under the dual influence of shipping capacity and excess production volume, China Shipbuilding, Guangzhou Shipyard International, etc. all have breakthroughs in offshore engineering business, while China Heavy Industry, CIMC, Zhenhua Heavy Industry and other companies are also large-scale offshore facilities and accessories.
