Air brake systems are commonly used in heavy trucks and buses. These systems include service brakes, parking brakes, a control pedal, and an air storage tank. The parking brake is usually a disc or drum system that remains engaged due to spring pressure. To release it, air pressure must be applied. When the driver presses the brake pedal, compressed air (around 100-120 psi or 690-830 kPa) is directed into the brake chamber, activating the service brakes. Most truck brakes are drum type, but there's a growing trend toward using disc brakes. The air compressor pulls in filtered air from the atmosphere and compresses it into high-pressure reservoirs at about 120 psi (830 kPa). Most heavy vehicles have a dashboard gauge to monitor air pressure, often with warning lights or sounds. A mechanical "wig wag" device also drops down into the driver’s view when pressure drops below a certain level. Setting the parking brake releases the compressed air between the tank and the brakes, allowing the spring brake to engage. If air pressure is lost suddenly, the spring brake will activate immediately. www.brakebrakes.com A compressed air brake system is divided into a supply system and a control system. The supply system compresses, stores, and provides high-pressure air to the control system as well as to auxiliary systems like gear shift controls and clutch assist servos.
