There are several exciting updates regarding new equipment and vehicles at O’Hare Airport. Some of these projects are already underway, while others remain in the planning stages. Let’s take a closer look:
- A brand-new ambulance has officially joined the fleet as Ambulance 26 at Rescue 1. Two more ambulances—#16 and #59—are anticipated to arrive at the airport very soon. These additions are part of an ongoing effort to enhance emergency response capabilities.
- The Aviation Department recently signed a 5-year contract with Oshkosh for up to eight advanced Striker ARFF units. The first vehicle, scheduled for delivery in August, will be a 3000-gallon 6×6 model, similar to those currently in service at O’Hare. Another identical unit is expected before the end of 2010. Depending on any potential changes in FAA regulations, two future units may feature upgraded 4500-gallon 8×8 configurations.
- In addition to the new fire trucks, a large mobile ventilation unit—a critical tool for managing air quality during emergencies—is currently being procured. This will provide enhanced safety measures for personnel working in confined or hazardous environments.
- We’re also anticipating the arrival of a brand-new mobile command post designated as 2-7-8. This asset will play a vital role in coordinating responses from remote locations when needed.
- Rescue 3 now boasts a state-of-the-art rehab unit labeled 5-7-3. Designed to support firefighters during prolonged operations, this unit ensures personnel receive proper rest, hydration, and medical attention if necessary.
- Rescue 1’s Mass Casualty Unit, 8-8-1, has undergone some upgrades. It is now equipped with a refurbished Bluebird bus, which improves capacity and operational efficiency during high-priority incidents.
- Battalion 6 recently acquired a sleek 2010 Ford Expedition, providing increased mobility and comfort for field supervisors.
- Two additional vehicles, 2-9-9 and 2-9-11, have been fitted out with new 2010 Ford F150 4-door pickup trucks featuring bed covers. These rugged trucks are ideal for various logistical tasks around the airport.
These developments reflect Chicago Fire Department’s commitment to maintaining cutting-edge resources while ensuring public safety remains a top priority. Stay tuned for further announcements as more details emerge!
