From postandcourier.com:

Latoya Riley, a resident of Charleston, South Carolina, was preparing pork chops for dinner when the grease in the pan caught fire. In a rush to put out the flames, she moved the pan to the sink, only to burn her hands when water hit the hot oil, causing a sudden flare-up of fire.

She immediately called 911, and the Charleston Fire Department arrived quickly. Captain Ryan Delk, who was on duty, shared that the team had just started their own dinner when they received the call.

Riley waited outside for her mother to come and take her to the hospital to treat the burns on her hands. While waiting, she watched as the firefighters worked to control the situation.

Once the smoke cleared, Captain Delk noticed something was still baking in the oven. He took it out, grabbed a new pan, and finished cooking the pork chops. He set the meal on the table for the family’s children and even cleaned up the kitchen before leaving.

“She had two little kids at home, so I didn’t want them to go hungry until 10 or 11 o’clock,” Delk explained. “It’s about more than just putting out fires.”

The City of Charleston’s Customer Service Initiative Committee recently recognized Delk for his act of kindness with a quarterly customer service award. They praised him for going above and beyond in helping a community member during a tough time.

Delk emphasized that being a firefighter isn’t just about responding to emergencies—it’s also about connecting with people and showing compassion when it matters most. “In this job, you have to be more than just a firefighter. You have to be a human being,” he said.
