She immediately called 911, and the Charleston Fire Department arrived quickly. Captain Ryan Delk, who was on duty, shared that the firefighters were just starting their own meal when they received the call.
Riley waited outside for her mother to come and take her to the hospital to treat the burns on her hands. While waiting, she must have felt helpless and scared, especially with the smoke still lingering in the air.
After the emergency was under control, Captain Delk noticed something unusual in the kitchen—a dish still baking in the oven. He took it out, grabbed a new pan, and decided to finish what was left of the pork chops. He even set the table for the kids and cleaned up the kitchen afterward.
“She had two young children at home,†Delk explained. “I didn’t want them to go without dinner until 10 or 11 o’clock.†His actions showed more than just professionalism—he showed empathy and care.
The city of Charleston’s Customer Service Initiative Committee recently recognized Captain Delk for his kind gesture, awarding him a quarterly customer service award. It was a small act, but one that made a big difference in someone’s day.
Delk emphasized that being a firefighter isn’t just about putting out fires. “It’s about being a people person,†he said. “You have to think beyond the job, especially when it comes to helping others in need.â€
