Voters to select fire district

The *Kane County Chronicle* recently published a story covering the upcoming ballot referendum that could affect residents in the Elburn Fire Protection District. The vote, scheduled for November 4, will determine whether some parts of the district choose to switch fire and emergency services to the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District. This issue has sparked significant political debate. The Elburn Village Board recently passed a resolution opposing the potential disconnection, while Fox River Fire Chief Greg Benson claims some opponents are spreading false information about his district. He insists that service quality won’t suffer if the area moves to Fox River, citing a court ruling that confirmed the new district would provide comparable emergency response. The proposed area for the disconnect includes approximately 3,000 registered voters, roughly bounded by LaFox Road to the east, Anderson Road to the west, Campton Hills Road to the south, and Silver Glen Road to the north. Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District Chief Kelly Callaghan emphasized that his agency has served the area for over 130 years and recently opened a station in Lily Lake to improve coverage. “We’ve been around a long time,” he said, highlighting their experience and commitment. Benson pointed out that the current process for emergency calls from the disconnect area is inefficient. Calls are first received by Kane Comm and then transferred to Tri-Com before being dispatched, which can take up to four minutes. In contrast, Fox River calls go directly through Kane Comm, reducing response time to about two and a half minutes. Another key argument for the change is the potential for lower property taxes. Elburn’s tax rate is about 0.79, while Fox River’s is 0.27. For example, a home on Fox Creek Drive in Campton Hills currently pays $1,548.28 in taxes to Elburn but would pay an estimated $524.44 to Fox River — a savings of over $1,000. On the lower end, some residents might save around $350 annually. If the referendum passes, Callaghan admitted that the exact financial impact on the Elburn district isn’t yet clear, as it depends on the final levy approval. However, he vowed not to lay off staff, emphasizing that the district still serves 20,000 people with the same level of service. Both districts charge EMS fees, a common practice, though the rates vary based on residency and ambulance type. Benson also clarified that Fox River doesn’t charge for standard fire responses, but does have a cost-recovery policy for specific cases, such as arsons or repeated false alarms. This policy allows the district to seek reimbursement in certain situations, he explained. As the election approaches, residents are encouraged to review all available information and consider how this decision might affect their community, safety, and finances.

Cell Culture Inserts

Cell and tissue culture technologies have an increasing importance in the fields of basic and applied life science. New culture vessels and new surfaces for cell adsorption are continuously emerging, in order to simulate the internal environment as much as possible for culture of some special cell lines. Logically, using permeable supports with a microporous membrane becomes the basic method for culturing these cells. Permeable supports may effectively improve the culture of polar cells, because these supports allow cells to secrete on and absorb molecules from their basal and apical surfaces to metabolize in a more natural way, as well as to stimulate the in vivo environment to the maximum extent for culturing of some special cell lines.
