TRW electro-hydraulic power steering will be applied to light commercial vehicles

The United States TRW Automotive Group recently announced the successful signing of a large-scale business and will provide a series of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) for a number of vehicle manufacturers with an Electro-hydraulic Power-assisted Steering System (EPHS), which is expected to be put into production in 2013. TRW's electro-hydraulic power steering systems have fuel-saving and emission-reducing properties comparable to those of pure electric power steering (EPS) and can be applied to higher-load vehicles. The latest generation of TRW electro-hydraulic steering system Gen-C is based on a 12-volt voltage structure, and its power output performance is the market leader.

Recently, the European Commission announced that it will implement stricter emission standards for light commercial vehicles. The goal is to reduce LCV emissions per kilometer to 175 grams in 2017 and to 147 grams by 2020.

Mr. Charlie Cregeur, Director of Global Turning Product Planning at TRW, said: “The proven technology of electro-hydraulic power steering can support light commercial vehicles, or vans. The annual average mileage of such vehicles is more than 100,000 kilometers. With a fuel savings of 0.3 litres and a reduction of about 7 grams, the benefits for large fleets and individual business operators are obvious. At present, there are 20 million sets of electro-hydraulic power steering systems used in the market. The performance and reliability of the system have been fully verified."

Mr. Frank Lubischer, vice president of steering engineering, added: “The emission reduction standards for vehicles are becoming increasingly stringent, and pure electric steering cannot meet certain load requirements. Therefore, electro-hydraulic power steering has great potential for development in the LCV market. Gen- The C motor pump unit can provide up to one kilowatt of power and can support loads of up to 18 kN for vehicles weighing no more than 7 tons."

The fuel economy and comfort features of electro-hydraulic power steering are attractive to commercial vehicle drivers and commercial fleets. TRW's electro-hydraulic power steering system also uses advanced speed steering technology, which is more flexible and can meet the requirements of various driving conditions to ensure safety and robustness at high driving speeds. Cars and city driving provide a comfortable experience. According to the load information provided by other on-board subsystems, electro-hydraulic power steering can also choose to use different auxiliary levels.

Mr. Lubischer concluded: “In order to rapidly introduce new vehicles and new power solutions to the market, the competition among automotive manufacturers is becoming increasingly fierce. The electro-hydraulic power steering technology has the advantages of easy application, flexible assembly of motor pump units, short development cycle, and low engineering costs. Advantages, and market feedback has always been good. This technology has been adopted by all types of vehicles including B-Class, SUV, LCV etc. While TRW leads the market with its Pure Electric Power Steering (EPS) solutions, we also see People have thought that the electro-hydraulic power steering technology, which will be completely replaced by EPS, still has continuous market demand.”
