Excerpts from woodtv.com:
Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was fatally struck by a passing vehicle while responding to an incident on eastbound I-94 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Authorities confirmed the tragic accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. after heavy rains, when fire crews were checking out two reported crashes near mile marker 81.
The Comstock Township Department of Fire & Rescue arrived at the scene and found an empty vehicle with no injuries reported. As the crew prepared to leave, a vehicle lost control and hit Chief Switalski, who was standing near the rear of his rescue unit.
Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate him, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was taken to Borgess Methodist Hospital for treatment.
Switalski had served more than 30 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois before relocating to West Michigan in 2013 to be closer to his daughters, who were students at Western Michigan University. He was sworn in as Fire Chief of Comstock Township on July 1, 2013, taking over from a chief who had led the department for over 40 years.
Messages of support and condolences poured in quickly following the news of his passing.
Thanks, Keith
Chief Ed Switalski retired after 34 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in 2013 and was 55 years old at the time of his death.
From Art Zern:
Ed was a remarkable individual—both a great firefighter and a wonderful instructor. He retired as a Battalion Chief from the Pleasantview Fire District after 24 years and later took on the role of Fire Chief in Comstock Township, Michigan. Many of your readers may have known Ed or learned from him through classes offered by SUFD, NIPSTA, or the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. My deepest condolences go out to his wife Holly and his daughters Emily and Allison.

Excerpts from firefightersclosecalls.com:
We are deeply saddened to report that Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was struck and killed while working at a crash scene on I-94 last night. At approximately 10:30 p.m., Chief Switalski was returning equipment to service near the rear of his command vehicle when another vehicle entered the scene and struck him.
Despite the efforts of Comstock firefighters and EMS personnel, Chief Switalski did not survive the injuries sustained. He was pronounced dead at the scene. While the department followed all standard safety protocols, the at-fault driver managed to bypass the blocking engine, leading to this tragic outcome.
This section of I-94 has long been associated with serious incidents. Among his many accomplishments, Chief Switalski received the Medal of Valor in 1989 for his actions during a line-of-duty fatality in Pleasantview, Illinois.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Chief Switalski’s wife Holly, his daughters Emily and Allison, and the entire Comstock Township fire family.
Chief Ed Switalski will be remembered not only for his service, but for his kindness, leadership, and dedication to the fire service. His passing leaves a deep void in the communities he served. We honor his memory and express our deepest sympathy to his loved ones during this difficult time.
