Excerpts from woodtv.com:
Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was tragically killed by a passing vehicle while responding to an accident on eastbound I-94 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m., following heavy rains that led to multiple crash reports.
The Comstock Township Fire Department was initially called to check two accidents near mile marker 81 on I-94. Upon arrival, they found an empty vehicle with no injuries reported. As crews were preparing to leave the scene, a vehicle lost control and struck Chief Switalski, who was standing near the rear of his rescue unit.
Emergency responders at the scene attempted to resuscitate him but were unable to save his life. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the at-fault vehicle was taken to Borgess Methodist Hospital for treatment.
Chief Switalski had served over 30 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois before moving to West Michigan in 2013 to be closer to his daughters, who were attending Western Michigan University. He was sworn in as Fire Chief of Comstock Township on July 1, 2013, taking over after a chief who had led the department for more than four decades.
Messages of support and condolences poured in quickly on Thursday morning, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he inspired across the fire service community.
Thanks, Keith
Chief Ed Switalski retired after 34 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in 2013. He was 55 years old when he passed away.
From Art Zern:
Ed was one of the most genuine and respected firefighters I’ve ever known. He was a great instructor, a dedicated firefighter, and a true character. After retiring as a Battalion Chief from the Pleasantview Fire District (after 24 years), he took on the role of Fire Chief in Comstock Township, Michigan, just a few years ago. Many of your readers may have known him or taken a class he taught through SUFD, NIPSTA, or the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association.
My deepest condolences go out to his wife Holly and his daughters Emily and Allison. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Excerpts from firefightersclosecalls.com:
We are heartbroken to share the news that we have lost a dear friend in the line of duty. Comstock Township Fire Chief Edward Switalski was struck and killed while working at a crash scene on I-94 last night at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Chief Switalski was returning equipment to service when another vehicle entered the scene and struck him and the rear of his command vehicle. Despite the best efforts of the Comstock firefighters and EMS personnel, the injuries he sustained were fatal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the department followed all safety protocols, the driver managed to bypass a blocking engine, which is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by first responders every day. This particular stretch of I-94 has a history of dangerous incidents, making this loss even more heartbreaking.
Chief Switalski was a hero to many. He received the Medal of Valor in 1989 for his actions during the line-of-duty death of a firefighter while serving with the Pleasantview Fire Department in Illinois. His legacy lives on in the communities he served, including Illinois, Michigan, and across the U.S. fire service.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Holly, his daughters Emily and Allison, and the entire Comstock Township fire department. He will be remembered not only for his service but also for his kindness, leadership, and dedication.
