Born in Joliet to Charles F. and Catherine M. Reichhardt, George was a lifelong enthusiast of firefighting and dedicated much of his life to preserving its history. He served with the East Joliet Fire Protection District and later retired as a captain from the Fermilab Fire Department.
George was not only a firefighter but also a passionate photographer, capturing the essence of fire apparatus from various departments across the region. His work helped document and preserve the legacy of fire equipment and the people behind it. He was an active member of several fire-related organizations, including Fire Buffs of Illinois, HOIFEC, SPAAMFAA, and the International Fire Photographers Association.
Throughout his career, George worked at multiple fire departments, including the Army Ammunition Plant, Rockdale Fire Protection District, and as a FAE Instructor and MABAS 15 Fire Photographer. His hobbies included photographing fire trucks, fires, trains, and towboats, and he had a special fondness for riding Chicago Squad 3 in the early days.
He authored two publications: *Fire Apparatus Photo Album of the Ford Tilt Cabs – The Visiting Fireman* (1985) and *Darley Fire Apparatus – The Visiting Fireman* (1987). George received numerous awards and recognition throughout his career for his contributions to the fire service.
Survived by his daughter Julie K. Reichhardt, brother Donald J. Reichhardt, sister Katherine Sheck, step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends, George was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Christina A. Bourg.
