Fire departments react to the severe weather

PRESS RELEASE

Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staff in Response to Harsh Winter Conditions

Effective Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has temporarily increased its on-duty personnel to ensure a swift response to emergencies without relying on neighboring fire departments. This adjustment ensures an additional ambulance is available and that the district’s water tanker can be deployed for fires in any area—whether or not it has access to fire hydrants.

Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “Heavy snow can make hydrant access difficult, and in extreme cold, water mains may break or hydrants may freeze, rendering them unusable. The water tanker helps improve our ability to respond effectively under these conditions.” He also noted that fire engine pumps can freeze if water sits inside without being used through hoses. In such cases, extra staff are dispatched in other vehicles to support operations without needing the main pump.

The fire district has had this contingency plan in place for years, and it’s typically activated during severe winter weather, as it is now. So far, there have been no fires or emergencies directly linked to the current weather conditions. However, Chief Gould urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice any issues, rather than waiting, as emergency response times may be slower due to the challenging conditions.

Palatine Fire Department needs help digging out fire hydrants

As the region continues to face unseasonably cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, the Palatine Fire Department is working closely with local officials to ensure all emergency services remain fully operational. Crews have been seen clearing snow around fire hydrants, which is essential for quick access during emergencies. Residents are reminded to keep sidewalks and hydrant areas clear to assist first responders in case of an emergency. The department is also encouraging community members to stay informed about weather updates and to reach out if they need assistance with anything related to the severe conditions.
