Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staffing in Response to Severe Winter Weather
Effective Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has increased its on-duty personnel to better manage emergency situations without relying on outside assistance. This decision ensures that an additional ambulance is available and that the district’s water tanker can respond to fires across all areas, not just those without fire hydrants.
Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “Heavy snow can make it hard to access fire hydrants, and in extreme cold, water mains may break or hydrants may freeze, rendering them unusable. The water tanker helps improve response times in these conditions.†He also noted that fire engine pumps can freeze if water isn’t flowing through the hoses, so having more staff allows for quicker action on calls that don’t necessarily require the full use of the pump.
The district has had a contingency plan in place for years, and this is the second time this winter they’ve activated it. So far, there have been no major incidents directly linked to the severe weather. However, Chief Gould urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice any issues, as response times are already longer due to the harsh conditions.

From the Palatine Fire Department:
As temperatures continue to drop and snow accumulates, the Palatine Fire Department is working closely with local officials to ensure fire hydrants remain accessible. Volunteers and crews are currently helping to clear snow from key hydrant locations to maintain emergency readiness. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and report any issues they observe in their neighborhoods.
