Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
Chicago police and firefighters arrived just before 2 a.m. on Tuesday at the 8200 block of South Cornell Avenue in Stony Island Park after receiving reports of a house fire. Upon arrival, they discovered that nearby fire hydrants were frozen, significantly slowing down their efforts to control the blaze.
An 81-year-old woman, who neighbors said lived alone, was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and later succumbed to her injuries. She was found in the kitchen, just a few steps away from an exit. Firefighters noted that there were no working smoke detectors in the home, which could have provided crucial early warning.
In the aftermath, Chicago Fire Department crews went door-to-door, distributing free smoke detectors to residents in the area. The fire is believed to have started in the basement, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Officials emphasized that a functioning smoke alarm might have given the victim more time to escape safely.
