Cicero 4-Alarm fire with 2 specials – 1-21-14

This is the first in a series of updates covering the massive fire that broke out in Cicero on Tuesday night. The blaze started at 1829 54th Avenue and quickly spread to 1843 54th Avenue. Within less than an hour, the situation escalated to four alarm levels, prompting a special call for assistance from both Chicago and a task force from MABAS Division 20. Here’s a quick recap of what happened: Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after the initial report, but the fire grew rapidly, forcing crews to bring in additional resources. The flames were intense, with heavy fire conditions visible just minutes after the first photos were taken. Several departments worked together to contain the fire, including units from Oak Park, which used their aerial ladder to attack the flames from above. We’ve got several images from Eric Haak, with more coming soon from Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro. Stay tuned for more updates as the story develops. Here’s what Eric had to say about his photos: > "The first photo was the first one I took. Shots 4 and 5 show the heavy fire blowing out the sector 4 side of the building about 10 minutes later. Pictures 6, 7, and 8 capture Oak Park’s tower working the sector 2/3 corner. Picture 3 shows Cicero Engine 1 using its deck gun, which they only did for a few minutes."
