Chinese and foreign businesses respond positively to the policy of limiting the use of plastic bags

In response to the central government's announced policy of restricting the use of plastic shopping bags, some Chinese and foreign businessmen in Beijing said on the 9th that they will respond positively and adopt supporting measures to facilitate customers.
The General Office of the State Council recently issued the “Notice on Restricting the Use of Plastic Shopping Bags for Production and Sales”, which pointed out that since plastic shopping bags have become the main source of white pollution, all supermarkets, shopping malls, and collections in the country have been in effect since June 1, 2008. The retail shopping malls and other commodity retail establishments shall implement the system of paid use of plastic shopping bags, and shall not provide plastic shopping bags free of charge.
The reporter learned from the supermarkets in Beijing on the 9th that although they are still using unpaid plastic shopping bags, they all support the country’s limited-use policy and are actively preparing to implement them.
Carrefour Chen Bo, who is in charge of public relations, told reporters that Carrefour has taken this policy very seriously and will actively observe it. It will ensure that preparations are completed by June 1.
People involved in businesses such as Wal-Mart and the Wangfujing Department Store stated that the policy of restricting the use of plastic shopping bags is based on the public interest of the entire society and is consistent with corporate social responsibility. It is an obligatory obligation of the company.
A staff member of the Wangfujing Department Store said that one of the major concepts of this year's Beijing Olympic Games is the Green Olympics. This policy is an excellent opportunity for our commercial companies to contribute to the Green Olympics. In addition to complying with national regulations, we will also take the initiative to do something. Guide the work of educating consumers.
Many retailers in Beijing indicated that the policy will bring some inconvenience in the short term, but it will not bring much impact to the market in the long run. Merchants will actively provide supporting measures to facilitate customers.
Wal-Mart said that at present, environmental protection shopping bags have become very common in developed countries. In the future, Wal-Mart will increase promotional efforts. At the same time, it also considers converting some of its employees’ old uniforms into shopping bags and offering them to consumers free of charge.
Chen Bo said that since 2004, Carrefour has been promoting non-woven reusable shopping bags in the Chinese market. In November last year, it also launched new recyclable shopping bags, which sold 80,000 in ten days. In the future Carrefour will also step up efforts to promote eco-friendly shopping bags and guide consumers' environmental protection concepts.
