China's coking industry is still facing pressures such as overcapacity

Jin Qiang, chairman of the China Coking Industry Association, recently stated at the inaugural meeting of the Shanxi Coking Enterprises Alliance that at present, the coking industry in China has seen a rebound in prices and improved efficiency, but it still faces pressures such as overcapacity, waste of resources, and serious pollution.

Huang Jingan believes that the problems that emerge include: First, excess capacity. In some areas, there is still production of soil coke and modified coke, and the elimination of outdated small coke ovens is progressing slowly. With a number of iron and steel joint enterprises accelerating the construction of supporting coke ovens, the industrial chain of a group of coal companies extends to coke, and a batch of large and medium-sized coking enterprises have production capacity. With the expansion, the capacity of new coke ovens will continue to grow, and the coking industry will have to continue to limit production and reduce production in order to maintain a balance between supply and demand. At present, the coking industry is still facing a relatively large loss. In February of this year, the country’s independent accounting coking enterprises still faced a loss of more than 34%.

Second, waste of resources and environmental pollution are serious. A batch of coking enterprises did not carry out product recovery and there was no recycling of coke oven gas, causing serious waste of resources. A large number of coking enterprises have inadequate environmental protection facilities, and the discharge of pollutants such as waste water, waste gas and waste slag is not up to the standard, seriously polluting the environment, and the task of energy conservation and emission reduction is very arduous.

Third, the pressure on the international market has increased. The state limits the export of high-energy, high-pollution, and resource-based products, and coke exports are faced with the possibility of raising tariffs. At the same time, the dependence of the international market on Chinese coke is declining, which also increases the competitive pressure in the coking industry.
