This is the first in a series of updates on the fire that occurred at the Woman’s Club of Wilmette, located at 930 Greenleaf Avenue. The incident took place around 10:00 AM on February 17, 2015, after an automatic fire alarm was triggered. Fire crews from Wilmette arrived first and quickly noticed smoke coming from the roof, prompting the alarm to be upgraded to a Code 4, indicating a working fire.
When the fire department arrived, all occupants had already evacuated the building. A small interior attack was made, but firefighters were forced to pull back due to the rapidly growing fire. As a result, the call was escalated to a Box Alarm, bringing in additional units from surrounding areas.
Multiple aerial ladder companies were deployed, including Wilmette Tower 26, Northbrook Tower 12, Evanston Truck 23, and Morton Grove Quint 4. Engine companies on scene included Wilmette Engine 27 and Winnetka Engine 28, along with support from Lincolnwood, Glenview, Northfield, Des Plaines, Skokie, and other nearby departments. Additional resources included a Skokie squad, both Wilmette ambulances, the Mess Canteen, MABAS Division 3 Comm 3, and several chief officers overseeing operations.
Here are some photos from Larry Shapiro, who was on-site capturing the intensity of the fire. Tim Olk and Jeff Rudolph were also present documenting the event. These images provide a powerful visual of the flames breaking through the roof and the efforts of the responding firefighters.
