Biomass industry shows unique low carbon advantages

Zhi Zhimei, chief strategy analyst of Consulting Division of China National Chemical Information Center, said in an interview with reporters last week that the biomass industry is showing its unique advantages and broad development prospects in the process of promoting low-carbon economic development and will become a low-carbon country in China. The best choice for the road.

Min Zhimei pointed out at a meeting of biochemical technology held not long ago that the unique advantage of the biomass industry is to minimize CO2 emissions. It is predicted that the biomass industry will reduce CO2 emissions by 1 billion to 2.5 billion tons by 2030. Among them, the production of material energy through efficient bioconversion technology can greatly reduce carbon emissions while obtaining green energy. According to the product life cycle analysis, biomass materials are in the bud stage and development stage, and there is great potential.

She told reporters that in the development of bio-energy, cellulosic ethanol is the main contributor to the future low-carbon economy. The current state-of-the-art has been able to produce lignocellulosic ethanol, but the production cost is too high. In particular, the high-efficiency yeast strains that can metabolize C5 to produce ethanol are immature. As a result, about 25% of the raw hemicellulose cannot be converted into ethanol. . However, lignocellulosic ethanol is expected to break through the technical bottleneck in the next 3 to 5 years, and eventually achieve industrialization.

Min Zhimei introduced that biomass power generation is currently the main way to develop renewable energy in the world, and China National Power Generation Corporation has a very good industrial base in this area. Low-carbon biogas with methane as its main component can effectively utilize low-quality biomass raw materials and is increasingly favored by the developed countries and regions such as the European Union, Japan, and the United States. Biofuels are also promising for replacing traditional aviation kerosene, and Airbus has announced that it will use second-generation biofuels as an alternative fuel.

Regarding biomass materials, Zhi Zhimei pointed out that compared with petroleum-based materials, it can be biodegraded, and the entire production process is relatively mild and green. The development of biomass materials can greatly reduce the dependence of polymer materials production on fossil resources such as oil, while reducing CO2 emissions. For example, CO2 and epoxy compound biodegradable plastics not only solve the environmental problems caused by CO2, but also avoid the "white pollution" of plastics.
