The Chicago Tribune reported on a house fire that occurred this morning in Aurora, injuring three residents. According to officials, the incident took place at 9:55 a.m. on the 900 block of Garfield Street in the far western suburb of Aurora. The fire, classified as a two-alarm blaze, required the response of 50 firefighters, including members from Aurora’s rapid intervention team.
The two-story home was declared a total loss after flames spread into the walls and attic, making it difficult to fully contain. Three people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and minor injuries, with officials stating the injuries are not life-threatening. One woman and a man were rescued from a rear upper porch by three Aurora police officers, assisted by an 18-year-old neighbor who used a ladder before emergency crews arrived.
Local agencies such as Sugar Grove and North Aurora also responded, while Naperville and Oswego provided additional support during the incident. The fire is still under investigation, and no cause has been officially determined yet.
From The Beacon-News, we learned more about the heroism that unfolded during the fire. Josue Lopez, an 18-year-old Aurora resident, played a key role in rescuing two adults trapped inside the burning home. He and his family had just left their house when they heard screams coming from the nearby residence on Garfield Avenue.
A young woman ran out of the house, shouting that her parents were still inside. Without hesitation, Lopez rushed to help. Upon arriving, he found Dave Dykstra, 51, and his wife Valerie, 50, trying to escape through a broken window. The couple was badly cut from the glass, and the house was already engulfed in flames.
Lopez tried to retrieve a ladder but found it chained. After struggling to free it, he decided to ask the couple to jump from the roof. Fortunately, Aurora police officers arrived shortly after and managed to cut the ladder free, allowing them to safely rescue the couple. Both were taken to the hospital with cuts and smoke inhalation, and were later reported in stable condition.
Victoria, their daughter, and four family dogs escaped unharmed. Lopez, though hailed as a hero, downplayed his actions, saying he simply did what needed to be done. “I wasn’t thinking about being a hero,†he said. “I just wanted to help.â€
The fire caused over $300,000 in damage and is currently under investigation by the Aurora Fire Department’s Arson Team. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of house fires and the importance of quick action in emergencies.
