ABC15.com recently published a touching article detailing the final journey of 19 brave hotshot firefighters who lost their lives while battling the Yarnell Fire in Arizona last week. The emotional farewell took place on Sunday, as the firefighters' bodies were transported in individual white hearses over a 125-mile route through Arizona, marking their last trip home.
The somber procession began near the state Capitol in Phoenix and passed through the town of Yarnell, where the Granite Mountain Hotshots were killed. It concluded in Prescott, the mountain community where they lived and will be laid to rest this week. The five-hour journey was filled with deep respect and sorrow, as thousands of people gathered along the route, braving extreme heat to honor the fallen.
In Phoenix, crowds lined highways and overpasses, while in downtown Prescott, the usually lively Whiskey Row fell silent as the hearses passed by. Many held American flags and signs reading “Courageous, selfless, fearless, beloved†and “Yarnell remembers.†Motorcycle escorts, honor guards, and firefighting trucks accompanied the procession, adding to the solemn atmosphere.
As the hearses made their way through the city, bagpipes played, and the crowd stood in respectful silence. A historic DC-3 plane, used for wildland firefighting, released long purple and pink ribbons with each firefighter’s name written on them, drifting gently down as the procession paused outside the medical examiner's office.
Inside each hearse, the American flags that had been draped over the firefighters at the scene of their deaths remained with them until burial. Afterward, these flags will be presented to their families. Family members watched from a distance, away from the media, at a makeshift memorial outside the fire station where the men were based. The memorial included messages, photos, and symbolic items like 19 water bottles and toy fire trucks.
Since their bodies were discovered, the firefighters have never been left alone, a tradition among U.S. firefighters. “From the moment they were taken to the medical examiner, through the funeral home, there will always be a brother firefighter on site,†said Paul Bourgeois, a spokesperson for the families. “We never leave your side.â€
The firefighters died during the Yarnell Hill fire, which started on June 28 due to lightning. At the time of the tragedy, crews were close to containing the blaze, which had destroyed over 100 homes and burned nearly 13 square miles. Although the town remained evacuated, residents were expected to return home soon.
A memorial shirt campaign is now underway, with all proceeds going to support the families of the fallen. The initiative was started by Image Apparel Solutions, who connected with the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association to help raise funds. Donations can be made at any Chase Bank under the account number 987218757.
