Working fire in Calumet City, 1-5-21

This report comes from Rob G (Gfdrob):

On January 5, 2021, around 09:00 hours, a fire was reported at 31-154th Place, at Lauer’s Tap. It was a one-story ordinary building. The initial call was for a smoke investigation. Engine 11 arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the structure. They attempted to enter through the front door with a line, but conditions quickly deteriorated, and the floor became unstable, preventing any interior attack. The lines were pulled back, and defensive operations were initiated. Four engine companies, along with the SH T-43 master stream, worked to control the fire from the exterior.

It was a tough call—smoke was visible from the outside, but once they tried to go in, things got really bad fast. The floor wasn’t stable, so they had to pull back and fight it from the outside. Fire crews did a good job keeping it under control. I took some photos during the incident, and you can see the firefighters working hard to contain the blaze. There's also a slideshow available if you want to see more images from the scene.
