UAE: rising star in the petrochemical industry in the Middle East

Located in the UAE in the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula, it is rich in oil and gas resources. According to statistics, its oil reserves are 13.34 billion tons, ranking third in the world; natural gas reserves are 20 billion cubic feet, ranking fifth in the world. With its rich oil and gas resources, the United Arab Emirates has been vigorously developing the petrochemical industry in recent years. Its position in the global petrochemical market has become increasingly important and has become a rising star in the Middle East.
Use of oil and gas resources to develop the petrochemical industry In recent years, the UAE has paid increasing attention to the use of oil and gas resources to further develop the petrochemical industry to expand the export of chemicals and increase foreign exchange earnings. At its Abu Dhabi Investment Conference, which opened on November 18, 2007, its largest emirate Abu Dhabi government announced that the government plans to allow more companies to invest in the petrochemical industry in order to make full use of the abundant natural gas resources of the Abu Dhabi emirate. In the next 25 years, the chemical industry will become an important part of the economy of Abu Dhabi.
The United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the most important oil companies in the UAE and one of the 50 largest oil companies in the world, was established in 1971. Its subsidiaries include the Abu Dhabi State Oil Sales Company, the State Drilling Company, the Abu Dhabi Onshore Oil Operating Company, the Abu Dhabi Ocean Operation Company, the Abu Dhabi Gas Industry Company, and the Abu Dhabi Natural Gas Liquefaction Company.
In October 1980, ADNOC and Total Fina Elf of France established Ruvius Fertilizer Industry in a 2-1 ratio. After years of expansion, the fertilizer company's ammonia production capacity has reached 450,000 tons/year and the urea production capacity has reached 650,000 tons/year. In addition, the company also produces methyl tert-butyl ether (a production capacity of approximately 500,000 tons/year) and other chemical products, such as the use of lean gas from offshore oil fields to produce fertilizers for sale in local and international markets.
In 2001, ADNOC teamed up with Borealis to form a petrochemical joint venture company, Borouge, and began the process of its petrochemical industry. It is reported that Borouge has a 600,000-ton/year ethylene cracker and downstream derivatives include 580,000 tons/year of LLDPE/HDPE units and 27,000 tons/year of butylene units.
The annual production capacity of ethylene will be expanded to 2 million tons of "Borouge 2" expansion project, which is Borouge's world-class petrochemical engineering project in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The "Borouge 2" project was started at the end of 2007 and is expected to be completed in 2010. The project includes a 1.5 million-ton/year ethane cracker, the world's largest 752,000 tons/year olefin conversion unit, two North Star bimodal polypropylene plants with a total capacity of 800,000 tons/year, and a production capacity of 540,000. Tons/year of Beixing Double Peak Reinforced Polyethylene Plant. After the completion of the project, the company's polyolefin production capacity will be expanded from 600,000 tons/year in 2005 to 2 million tons/year. The "Borouge 2" project has invested billions of dollars and is one of the largest petrochemical projects in the Middle East. The new expansion facility is located next to Borouge's existing Ruwais petrochemical plant. The products it produces will be sold mainly in the Middle East and Asia Pacific regions.
Borouge also formulated the third phase of the plan, which is to build a comprehensive project for large-scale ethane cracking. According to the third phase of the plan (2008-2010), Borouge will establish an ethylene cracker with a capacity of 1.2 million to 1.4 million tons/year in Ruwais with the Nordic company. It is expected to be completed and put into production in 2014, when the UAE’s ethylene The production capacity will be doubled than it is now, ie 1.8 million to 2 million tons/year. Currently, the company has embarked on a feasibility study of the Borouge 3 project to further expand its polyolefin production scale in Abu Dhabi. According to the plan, the company will add approximately 2.5 million tons per year of polyolefin production capacity on the basis of the original production scale in 2014, including a set of low-density polyethylene devices. The device is specialized in producing high-performance wire and cable materials. The "Borouge 3" plan will increase the company's total polyolefin production capacity to 4.5 million tons per year, which will better meet the growing demand in the dedicated polyethylene and polypropylene markets in the Middle East and Asia Pacific region.
The development direction is aligned with the refinement of deep processing. In recent years, the petrochemical industry in the UAE has also begun to develop in the direction of fine processing. Recently, AkzoNobel Powder Coatings opened a new powder coating factory in Dubai. This is the company's first production plant built in the UAE. The investment project shows that AkzoNobel has begun to promote development plans in the Middle East. The 35-kilometre southwestern Jebelali Port facility will provide a full range of services and products to UAE and its surrounding users, including color matching, rapid customization of products and technical support.
There are 262 plastic companies in the UAE. The development of the plastic product market has contributed to the promotion of the construction and real estate industry in the UAE. Among the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the UAE is second only to Saudi Arabia in the plastics industry. The UAE's domestic market has a very small capacity, and its products are mainly exported to developing Asian markets.
The pharmaceutical industry in the United Arab Emirates also has great development. At present, there are five pharmaceutical production companies in the country, of which Gulf Pharmaceuticals is located in Ras Al Khaimah and can produce 275 kinds of antibiotics and other drugs. The other four pharmaceutical companies are Neopharma in Abu Dhabi Industrial City, Global Pharma in Dubai and Gulf Inject, and Medtech in Sharjah. Medpharma). 80% of pharmaceutical products in the UAE rely on imports, and the remaining 20% are produced by UAE companies.
