Civil Aviation Resources Network April 21, 2015 News: According to Reuters, on April 20, U.S. federal authorities said that airport workers will undergo more stringent security checks.
In a statement, US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stated that airport and airline employees must now undergo TSA inspections before departure. Employees will also face more and more random checks during their work. Airport employees located in specially designated security areas must undergo a fingerprint history check for crimes every two years. The inspection will then be replaced by the real-time crime history inspection system established by the TSA. The number of entrances to the security area will also be reduced.
In December 2014, Delta’s baggage sorter was accused of helping others smuggling 18 pistols on flights from Atlanta to New York. The prosecutor stated that the plan had been in place for many years and that smuggling included offensive weapons. Johnson then asked to review the inspection work of airport staff in January.
Johnson said: "After this incident, TSA immediately added random and irregular inspections to aviation staff at the entrances of various airports to improve the safety of potential weak security inspections."
After the gun smuggling incident, Senator Charles Schumer recommended that the TSA mandate that all airline and airport employees undergo security checks before working every day. Schumer said: "The statement issued on the 20th is a very timely response, and it is an extremely important first step in reducing airport security breaches, especially in terms of reducing entrance and improving criminal background checks."
In January 2015, an inspector at the security checkpoint was arrested for carrying a gun in his baggage. The FAA suspended the project that allowed the inspectors to evade security at work.
