New fire chief in Aurora

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner announced on Thursday that he has nominated Gary Krienitz, a 19-year veteran of the Aurora Fire Department, as the city’s next fire chief. The recommendation comes as current Chief John Lehman prepares to retire on February 19, and Krienitz is expected to take over the following day.

Krienitz, 43, was selected from a group of six strong internal candidates, highlighting the strong leadership culture that has been developed under Lehman’s tenure. The mayor made the announcement in the main bay of the Central Fire Station downtown, where many firefighters, department leaders, members of the Aurora Police Department, aldermen, and members of the public were in attendance.

The Aurora City Council will need to approve the appointment. A special meeting of the committee of the whole will be held at 5 p.m. on January 26 to discuss the proposal.

"When I was in high school at Waubonsie Valley, a friend invited me to ride with Medic 4 at Fire Station 4. I never imagined that short ride-along would shape who I am today," Krienitz reflected. "Now being considered for the role of the next fire chief is an incredible honor."

In 2014, Krienitz was named Firefighter of the Year in Aurora. Alongside Private Jason Larson and Private Dan Murphy, he received the department’s highest award for his heroic actions during a dangerous motel fire that saved two lives.

A member of the National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators, Krienitz holds over 15 certifications, including evidence technician, rescue specialist, arson investigator, emergency medical technician, juvenile fire setter counselor, and personal trainer. He has completed more than 50 training courses through various agencies such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the Illinois State Police Academy for Arson, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Krienitz earned his degree in fire science from the College of DuPage and served as a team leader with the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force. He also expressed deep gratitude to Chief Lehman for his mentorship throughout his career, calling him a guiding force. He also thanked all the firefighters in Aurora, whom he described as “smart and excellent” and always supportive of one another.

Thanks Dan
