From the Mendota Fire Department:
On Monday, the 14th, crews from the Mendota and Troy Grove Fire Departments, along with the Mendota Police Department, responded to a large pallet fire located just south of Mendota. Upon arrival, the first responders encountered an enormous and extremely hot fire involving approximately 8,000 wooden pallets. Due to the intensity of the fire, a MABAS box alarm was immediately activated, escalating to a third alarm. Strong northerly winds contributed to the rapid spread and increased intensity of the flames.
Firefighters worked quickly to protect nearby structures and prevent the fire from spreading further. One firefighter was overcome by the extreme heat and was transported to Saint Paul Medical Center for evaluation. Fortunately, the firefighter was released later that evening.
The response was nothing short of heroic, with all personnel working under extremely challenging conditions. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to every firefighter and emergency responder involved, including those from Mendota, Troy Grove, LaSalle, Peru, Earlville, Amboy, Sublette, LaMoille, Utica, Cherry, West Brooklyn, Paw Paw, Wallace, Shabbona, Leland, Lee, 10/33 amb, ISP District 17, and the dispatchers from Mendota, ValCom, and Ottawa MABAS Division 25. A special thank you also goes out to ComEd for their support.
It’s reassuring to know that we have such dedicated and professional teams in our area who can be counted on during emergencies. Their quick action and teamwork made a huge difference in this incident.
