Chicago 4-11 Alarm fire, 1-2-62

Here's a message from Eric Haak:

January 2, 1962. A fire broke out at the 3-story Acorn Luggage factory on Western Avenue at Harrison Street at 8:30 a.m., and it quickly escalated to a 4-11 alarm. The first photo shows a view looking north toward the old Crane Junior College, which was still standing at the time. The building visible in the image no longer exists, though. You can also spot the old Chicago Stadium in the distant background. The second image captures the scene looking across Western Avenue toward the southeast. The final photo features firefighters from Snorkels working in an alley, which today would be referred to as the “C” side of the street. The truck company parked on Western appears to be Engine 19, based on the number I can see on the door. I'm sure our staff historians will correct me if I'm mistaken. If you look closely in the background, you'll notice the large Phillips 66 neon sign that once stood above the Eisenhower Hotel, as well as the old Harris Bank Christmas billboard on top of one of the buildings. It’s a fascinating glimpse into Chicago’s past. Hope you enjoy this nostalgic look back.
